D#6 HW#5 Alternative Key Words & Develop a List of Search Terms
*Key Words
Teen, education, sex, STD, pregnancy, statistics.
-These are general key words that could potentially get me some good info. However they are not specific enough to the topic. I think that's the idea of this assignment, what search terms would not work versus ones that would. Expand on the search terms that generate good results.
I don't have the time to go talk to a librarian.
*Search Terms
-Should teen have sex education in schools?
-Sexually transmitted disease
-abstinence only sex education
-teenage pregnancy sex education
D#6 HW#4 Should You Conduct Primary or Secondary Research?
*Primary: I want my readers to want to be the change they wish to see (which i hope is a sexually healthy and educated future). Primary resources would be most effective in order to give the reader a true glimpse into what is really going on, and how ignorant most people are to the topic. Blogs and interviews will be most valuable for this portion.
*Secondary: Its always good to have statistics of school age people sexual health and pregnancy rates, which are available online.
AUDIENCE: What types of resources/data does your audience value - numbers and statistics? anecdotes and stories? case studies and ethnographies? expert testimonies? What will be most convincing?
*Primary: Like stated above, anecdotes and stories are necessary and will be most effective.
*Secondary: Statistics are great as well, just to give the overwhelming sense of whats going on, to put things in perspective for the reader on a larger scale.
TOPIC/QUESTION: What type of information do you need to answer your question thoroughly/.
*Primary: Facts from people who are currently dealing with sexual health issues as a young person who has/has not received sex education. What went right/wrong in their sec education to get them where they are now.
*Secondary: Statistics as evidence that a good sex education will lead to healthier/smarter sex choices.
AUTHOR: What time frame do you have for completing this project? What types of resources do you have access to? Who can help you locate and gather information? What are who do you have access to for gathering information?
If I'm not mistaken, I have a few weeks to collect this info. I'm sure i can locate and gather all the info on my own, if by some weird chance I can't, or am having issues, I'll ask my peers or teacher. I have access to books, people (friend with and STD, cousin found out she prego last night @ age 17, sex-ed teachers) and the Internet.

D#6 HW#3 "Will Distance Learning Replace Traditional Instruction?"
*Over all it was an interesting topic....that's about it.
How does it fit the WP#2 assignment prompt?
*Well it had references of things he researched...talked about the history of the topic and why it was controversial.
If you were going to revise this to submit for WP#2, what would you change? Why?
*I would change a lot! There was no reference to audience, or purpose for research & writing. He did not give an opinion so I would add one. Didn't let you know here he stood on this "issue". His main focus was on the history of the topic. I feel like this example would earn a C at best ha ha!

D#5 HW#8 Grammar Assignment #2
This topic is very controversial because people have so many different personal opinions. My audience cares because it directly affects them, their families, and friends. They can all relate in one way or another. I plan to research health websites for stats on sex education and its effectiveness. I’m going to talk to my siblings and parents in an effort to hear other view points, and gain some insight to their point of view. I will also consult some of the blogging sites to see what other people are going through, talking about, and what opinions they have.
New:
The audience will most likely include teens, young adults, parents, and anyone interested in the topic. They will want to know factual, interesting information on whether sex-education has effects on the health of young people. Furthermore, they will also be interested in opposing arguments, opinions, and viewpoints so they can come to a conclusion of their own. In addition, they will need concrete evidence and relatable experiences noted in order to connect with the topic.

http://grammar.quickanddirtytips.com/avoiding-redundancy.aspx
*this is the site i used. i feel like at times i am annoyingly redundant. This site helped identify the issues that many people have and simple ways to go about correcting yourself, by breaking down each sentence and removing the obviously overstated.
D#5 HW#6 Decide What Primary Data to Collect
*Is thee a person, place, activity, or ritual that you might watch, hear, or experience in order to answer you research question?
-I may talk to young people to get there opinions.
*Would observing your subject over time provide data that would help you answer your research question?
-hmm maybe but not sure, i think its pretty simple.
*Could you participate in an event, ritual, or environment that would give you a Unique insight into the subject you are studying?
-i could sit in on a sex ed class.
Interviews
*Would talking to experts in a particular field help you to answer you research question?
-Talking to teachers and doctors may help.
*Would speaking with participants in or member of a specific community help you to answer your research question?
-Parents and teens in an effort to get their opinions and insight on their experiences.
*What could you learn from speaking with someone that you can't learn from reading already published information or from conducting an observation?
-Specific real life examples.
Surveys
*What can you learn from a survey that you can't learn from an interview or observation?
-Actual statistics.
*How many people would you need to poll in order to answer you research question?
-Lots!
*How do you have the time to design a successful survey, distribute it, collect responses, and analyze the data?
-I honestly don't think i would have the time. It would have to be very specific yet general enough anyone could answer it, would be hard to distribute to enough people, not to mention collecting and reviewing the info. not for me please.

I think the whole peer review process is so very necessary. It benefits both the person reviewing the writing and the person who receives the review. While reading and reviewing my peers papers I realized there was a lot I needed to change about my own paper. I really need to focus on my organization of thoughts and paragraphs in an effort to make the paper flow more smoothly.
people who reviewed my draft: andres & Klindenberg.
*I was not at all surprised by their comments, i appreciate them and they were very helpful. Keep the honesty coming! They specifically stated things i knew i needed to work on.
I read my originality report, it said 0% similarity. I figure this is a good thing, I'm not surprised because i did my own work. Before submitting a final draft of my work i have to make many small corrections in spelling and grammatical errors, i also want to reorganize some of my paragraphs.

This weeks assignments have helped me achieve the competencies by developing a rhetorical situation, recognizing my audience, and formatting citations.
This week has helped me get closer to my personal goal of keeping up in this class and working on becoming a better writer.
I better understand research and the writing process by taking each assignmen one at a time spending time fully understanding what is being asked and answering the questions to the best of my ability. i now have a better understanding of who my audience actually is and how i should affectively address them.
D#4 HW#9 WP#1
Should sex education be required in schools?
The taboo topic that rules our very world. Parents are often embarrassed to have “the talk” with their kids. This fact is undeniable, you see it advertised on commercials on popular networks such as MTV; about sites you can go to for tips on how to talk to your teen about sex. In my opinion, people are all too often living with eyes wide closed, filling their heads with thoughts like, “yeah, but that won’t happen to me” or “not my kid”. From a young age you are required to learn up to certain standards to move forward in school, which is then carried on later in life in a career. You even need to attend classes to get a drivers license. To bad they don’t make you take a sex class before you embark on that little adventure, literally putting your life on the line if you don’t know what you’re doing. Or how about receiving a certificate of completion before you are allowed to have a baby.
I was personally fortunate enough to receive sex education since the fourth grade. I personally think it was a great time, and perfect age to introduce the topic in general. The teaching was focused on personal hygiene and emphasis on anatomical changes, that would soon be happening in all of our pre-teen bodies. Parents had to sign a permission slip in order for you to be part of the class, and surprisingly many parents did not grant their student permission. Through the years this section of education stayed the same, changing only slightly in middle school when you watched the birth of a baby in science. At the time my peers and I all thought the scene was quite disturbing and long off in terms of direct relation to our lives. The funny truth is, that not more than two years later, that far fetched situation turned into a life changing reality for some my very age. I sat next to a pregnant girl in Spanish my sophomore year of high school. I thought of how hard it must have been for her. While the rest of us were thinking about the superficial, she had to think about future childcare arrangements, if she would be able to go to college, and if the father of her child would stick around to help her. There are high schools that actually have on site child care because so many of the students have babies. My senior year was no less educational when one of my very close friends contracted herpes. She just so happened to be one of those people who did not receive sex education, and sadly her parents never talked her about the risks. Now she has an incurable disease to deal with for the rest of her life, a totally preventable situation. Her ignorance, and many others is to blame for the spread of STDs’ in young people.
The purpose of this research and writing is to inform others of the unintentional ignorance that plagues our populations young people. To express my opinion on the topic, and explain why it is necessary for sex education to be a mandatory requirement in schools. It is vital to arm our societies young men and women with the knowledge to protect themselves and make smart decisions. Making an uneducated decision in this matter could cost them their future health and well being. I believe it would be beneficial to take chance out of the scenario that parents will educate their children on the topic.
In my opinion safe-sex should be taught in schools from a young age. I believe it would breed less curiosity, and effectively arm young people with the information necessary to practice safe-sex, know the risks, and be responsible. With this powerful knowledge how could our youth go wrong? There would without a doubt be a decrease in teen pregnancy and spread of STDs’. I am approaching this topic as one of these young people whose life has indirectly been affected by these very issues. I have two younger sibling who I worry about daily, and talk to openly about my knowledge on the subject, and encourage them to make healthy, smart decisions in their own lives. I understand that they are not receiving the same sex-education that I did, and are not being talked to enough from our parents. Not at the fault of our parents at all, but my siblings find it uncomfortable to speak with them about it.
My focused audience will most likely include teens, young adults, parents, and anyone interested in the topic. My audience will want to know factual, interesting information on whether sex-education has effects on the health of young people. I’m sure they will also be interested in opposing arguments, opinions, and viewpoints so they can come to a conclusion of their own. They will need concrete evidence and relateable experiences noted in order to connect with the topic.
I will also consult some of the bloging sites to see what other people are going through, talking about, and what opinions they have.
There are limitations to this project, because there are so very many variables to be considered. Opposing view points, beliefs, and situations that have occurred can not all be directly incorporated. However here is an opportunity to shed light on an important topic, put the facts out there, and express my own opinion and concepts. I plan to give the audience something to relate to. There is the challenge of effectively addressing the audience, which is so broad and opinionated, coming from different age groups, lifestyles, opinions, and beliefs. Overall I feel like I should be able to over come these challenges by doing the research and presenting the facts in a relatable manner. I hope for a healthier future for tomorrows youth.

D#4 HW#8 Take n Inventory Of What You Know
I think the main issue people would debate is if sex education should be taught in schools. Even further, should schools teach abstinence or safe-sex. I think people often disagree on whether or not underaged individuals should be intiteled to privacy rights, and recieve medical attention and medication without their parents concent.
*What do you believe about this topic? What evidence makes you believe this? Where did you find or learn about this evidence?
I believe this is an important topic. I believe it will be an iteresting read for my target audience, and meet the requirement of the assignment. I believe this based on the positive feed back from my peers and the activites that the assignment has been based on. I found this evidence in my own work and my peers responses. Based on some of the research i have done thus far, i believe this is an issue that affects everyone on a personal level, which makes it easy to relate to; another reason i chose to write about it. I like the fact that people have different opinions which can spark debate, give people something to talk about.
D#4 HW#7 What Is The Writer's Place in The Rhetorical Situation?
Its something I've had experience with, it's an issue I can relate to with friends, and having younger siblings. I feel like it's something that I care about enough to share and write about it.
*What did you already know about the issue, and how well could you answer your research question right now?
I still have not fully decided on the exact way I want to phrase my research question. However I feel like I know a great deal about the topic already since i have taken classes that focus on the topic such as Family Life.
*After conducting a preliminary exploration of the issue, have those interests been confirmed?
Yes, without a doubt. I am still fully interested in my topic.
*What has surprised you as you've conducted the preliminary exploration?
There are so many people out there voicing strong opinions who have been directly affected by the issue.
*Why do you value this issue?
Its not only a personal issue but a worldly one as well. All types of people everywhere are affected by teen sexual practices.

D#4 HW#6 Write a Research Question
*How can the spread of STDs & STIs be limited?
*Should teens be allowed to recieve medical attention without their parents consent?
*Would it be a good idea to only teach abstinance in schools?
*Where should the emphasis come for regarding sex-education, doctors, teachers, or parents?
2.I would like to share the information i gather on the issue i am researching. With the research i'm going to do i hope to compare the teachings of abstenance vs. safe-sex, and identifying what should be done about the problems that result.
3.I am writing to the instructor and my peers. I'm sure they have many interests.. My purpose in writing is to mostly get a good grade, but also researchmy topic, and present the information i find.
4.i don't want to cross anything off.
5.Would it be a good idea to only teach abstinance in schools?
D#4 HW#5 Focus Your Research Topic
*privacy issues, should teens be able to get birth control without parents concent?
*parents choice to have their childreen not be present during sex-ed.
*spread of STD's & STI's.
*affects on future health.
*teen pregnancy.
*abortion.
i could go on for days, this assignemnt helped me get some good central ideas i want to focus in on for my paper.
D#4 HW#4 How can i make a topic manageable?
2. I'm very interested in the topic of teen abstinence. I will be able to sustain my interest long enough to complete the assignment and research. The specific aspect of my topic that intrests me the most would be the education part of it, teaching safe-sex/absinance in schools which might be a good place for me to focus.
3. The writing task is very doable. The topic is gettng narrowed with each of these activites that i work on. There is plethera of information availale on the topic , but i think it will be just enough to complete the assignment successfully.

D#4 HW#3 TECHNO-TIP
*not sure if we were supposed to write anything about this but i figured why not. I think it could be a good idea to look into people blogs to see what they are saying about the topic, but i feel like you would probably get more opinionated info as opposed to factual info. Which could be good, but not great when doing research. =/
after checking out summers blog i realized that maybe we were supposed to answer some of these ?s
*What are people talking about?
I looked up my own, hope that's okay. Beach vacations, more specifically in Hawaii.
*How do the different blogs relate to one another? How are they similar? How are they different?
They were all linked based on the broad topic of beach vacations in Hawaii. They all discussed different activities that you could do and cool spots to check out. They were different however, because some focused on specific activities, giving direct information such as location cost and reviews. Others were more in general and more single person opinion.
*What subtopics did you learn about while following the conversations? Do some of the subtopics cause you to reconsider you understanding of the issue?
Like discussed above, it talked about specific activities including scuba diving, snorkeling, hotel resorts, ect. None of the subtopics made me consider the issue if you can call it that,a vacation isn't really an issue. There were however blog links from the original blog i looked at that were on airline prices and other vacation destinations.

D#3 HW#8-10
*What is the research question?
How does teen abstinence affect your future health?
*What is the context?
Information regarding your health as a teen and future depending on you choice to abstain from sex.
*What is the purpose?
To research the topic, argue a point, and successfully get that across to your audience.
*Who is the audience?
My peers, and instructor.
*How do you fit into the context?
It's a topic that affects me personally, family, and friends.
*How do the answers to these five questions affect one another and your understanding of the topic?
they all tie in together because ultimately they lead to the goal of a grade. The are the foundation of the assignment as a whole. I think i might change my topic just because i feel like i could pick something better i just don't have the time to think it through fully since the deadline for this is in 45 mins.
The rhetorical situation differs from W#1 because you are more or less presenting your research. W#2 you discuss your topic as from someone elses perspective, and in W#3 you combine both W#1 & W#2 in an effort to argue a point to your audience.
9. I think the topic of teen abstinence is particularly interesting. I’m just getting out of my teenage years so it’s a decision I’ve had to make myself. Also I have two siblings that are a couple years younger than me that I’m sure will have to make a decision on the topic if they haven’t already not to mention friends. I’ve had close friends whose health has been affected by STD’s and the decision in general to have sex while still in their teen years. I think that how you take care of you body now will have lasting affects on it later on. For example living with aids, or herpes, or some other sexually transmitted disease.
10. Is this like a practice on your own kind of thing or are their specific examples in the book?
D#3 HW#1-7
2. Read the following: Chapter 3, Appendix, & Chapter 12.
3. "Is Breast Always Best?"
*I liked that this research proposal was so well organized. The author clearly got her point across, and completed the assignment correctly. I think that it was a creative topic to choose that was very appropriate for the target audience.
*This example fit WP#1 by focusing on a particular topic (Breast Feeding Pressures). She designed a rhetorical situation that included both her own interests/experience. She explained her purpose while also keeping her target audience in mind.
*If I were going to revise this for WP#1 I wouldn't change anything. I thought it was very well written. Overall an excellent example that followed the assignment.
4.Identify Kairos
1. My motivation for doing this research and writing is to obtain a decent grade in this class. In doing so i believe it will inspire positive change in other aspects of my life that befit from my continued education.
2. Everything overlaps in my life. School, work, and personal aspects of my life tend to all get mixed up together and often account for my understanding of all things including this research.
3. I'm not quite sure at this point what I'm going to research or write about, so I'm not sure what will affect my understanding of the project at this point. So far all of the reading in chapter 3 has well prepared me with the skills i will need to execute this task correctly and understand the prompt guidelines and expectations.
5.Find Out What's Important to You
1. What discussions engage you and other members of the community?
Personal: foreclosure, unemployment, war, relationships.
Academic: Financial aid/cost of furthering your education.
Professional: Taxes, health insurance, unemployment.
Civic: Taxes, government, war.
2. What events or experiences have happened that you still remember and that left you, or other members of the community, with questions or concerns?
Personal: My parents almost lost their home to foreclosure, my brother and his family did. My sister is currently unemployed and has been out of work for about 8 months.
Academic: My financial aid just came in the mail yesterday (thank goodness!).
Professional: Income tax changed this year, I had to fill out all sorts of paperwork. Also health insurance rates/coverage changed, with that came more paperwork. This year started with layoffs and has just tapered off.
Civic: New president, all sorts of changes in government programs. A dear friend of mine lost his leg while serving in Afghanistan a few months ago.
3.What problems or concerns exist in this particular community?
*All of the above discussed in #2.
4.Who, which individuals and groups, is involved in this discussion, event, or problem? Why are they involved?
Financial Aid: I am the main person involved in this event since it was my check that came in the mail. My family is also involved though, since I was awarded the amount based on my parents income.
5.When and where did/does this discussion, event, or problem take place?
Yesterday, In my kitchen.
6.What exactly is the topic of the discussion, event, or problem?
Financial Aid.
7.Why is this discussion, event, or problem significant to the community members?
Without financial aid i wouldn't be able to afford school at all. It has helped me continue my education which in turn will benefit myself and my family.
8.How does the community usually start to resolve the discussion, event, or problem?
My family has helped contribute financially to the furthering of my eduction when financial aid was not enough.
6.Generate Topic Ideas
1.list 6-8 topics you find interesting and compelling.
*unemployment
*war
*health insurance
*financial aid
*teen abstinence
*age differences in relationships
2.Phrase each topic as a question.
*Why is the unemployment rate so high?
*What is currently being done by our government to safely bring our troops home?
*How will new health insurance laws affect small businesses?
*What affect is the current economic crisis having on federal financial aid?
*How does abstinence as a teen affect your future health?
*How much a an age gap in a relationship is too much?
4.Also I have two siblings that are a couple years younger than me that I’m sure will have to make a decision on the topic if they haven’t already not to mention friends.
*I worry constantly about the health of my family, especially my younger siblings. i don't want them to make the same mistakes that i did. It's a difficult age, most think there is nothing to be learned or figured out. So many things can be affected by that one decision. It could result in teen pregnancy, which could then affect you family financially, you emotionally, and your future education/career plans.
7.Consider Audience and Purpose
1.what might your audience be interested in? How could you relate your topic to your audience's experience?
*I think the main reason the audience would be interested in the topic is because its so easy to relate to. Its a topic that not only affects them as individuals, but their children (present/future), and friends.
2.Will the topic satisfy the purpose of your writing and research? What criteria must you keep in mind to make sure that you are meeting your writing goals?
*Yes the topic will satisfy the purpose of my writing and research. I may have to change the way I go about the ideas I have revolving around the topic but I'm sure I'll figure it out. I will have to constantly be thinking about my audience. Its one of my many writing flaws that I plan to correct. Other than that I will have to stick to the rubric to get an A =)

D#2 HW#8 REFLECTION

The assignments thus far have helped me gain a better understanding of rhetorical situation, I really don't think I have ever really focused any of my papers on my audience. I think that's why I was coming just short of an A last semester. The grammar sites helped me out a lot. I feel way more confident with comma usage. That was also part of my personal goals (to improve my grammar skills). Overall the first two chapters were very informative on how to go about researching a topic with the audience in mind in an effort to write a more effective paper.

D#2 HW#7 Grammer Assignment 1
I used the Purdue Owl site (http://owl.english.purdue.edu/owl/), last semester it was required that you take a grammar quiz followed by additional practice in your particular problem area. For me that would be the use of commas. I tend to through them in when i feel like it and leave them out when i don't. This site also shed light on the fact that people like myself often also misuse commas in place of a semi colon and vise versa. I also used the Grammar Girl site (http://grammar.quickanddirtytips.com/) mainly because it said "quick and dirty tips". From this site I learned when to use a colon (when joining two complete sentences). I found this to be the most interesting since I realized that I have never used a colon in any writing have ever done. Although I feel like I got a better understanding of when to use a comma, semi colon, and a colon, I know it will prove to be something i struggle with in the future.
The Great Depression brought a new style as development slowed in Phoenix. While some homeowners were obligated to sell, others converted their garages into living spaces. The owners moved into the newly converted garage space, and rented out the main house in an effort to hold on to their property and survive the economic situation. When the country came out of the Depression, these particular residents were able to move back into their homes and then rent out the converted garages as living spaces. The Depression also swayed the architecture of the Coronado district as it slowed development. When construction started up again, the styles of homes had changed and the outcome can be seen today in two specific areas within the Coronado district. Firstly in the area between 7th and 12th Streets, designs date back to the 1920’s, while the rest of the district dates to the late 1930’s and 1940’s. In late 1939, Coronado became the home of the first planned, mass-produced subdivision of tract homes in Phoenix. Developer, Andy Womack built the Womack Subdivision and led the way to development of the remaining tracts in the Coronado Neighborhood east of 12th Street by others who followed his success.
Although these little commas don't seem to be a huge part of the paper itself, they made the difference in my grade. I think the main thing that i learned about comma usage is that if I actually would read out loud what I write I can figure out where the pause should be or the obvious joining of two sentence fragments. It also helps to practice these skills on the Purdue Owl site.
D#2 HW#3-6 (PG. 6, PG. 8, PG. 12, PG. 26)
3.) How have you conducted research before?
I have conducted research many ways. I'm a fan of google, if i have no idea where to start with something I seem to always find ideas and information from there. It's never failed me to go to the library and browse what they have to offer for my particular research situation. Also, depending on what I am researching it's usually beneficial to get out and about and check things out myself. For example i did a paper last semester on architecture in Arizona. I gathered most of my information by actually going out and about and seeing it for myself. I've also tried trial and error.
4.) How do research processes compare?
Each of these research methods will offer different information depending on what it is you are trying to get out of the information you are gathering. For example if you are getting information online you will need to be sure that what you are reading is credible and current. Also its always different to experience something for yourself in order to get a better perspective on things as opposed to reading about someone elses take on it.
5.) How do rhetorical situations compare?
Depending on the rhetorical situation and audience your writing may be formal and detailed or informal and vague.
6.) What are your writing idiosyncrasies?
When I'm writing I usually like to brain storm and write an outline in an effort to get my ideas on paper and well organized.
